At Orchid Homestay, sustainability is not just a way of life; it’s tradition. Inspired by the way our grandparents lived, we’ve built our home to honor nature, respect the land, and be gentle on our planet. During your stay with us, you’ll experience the charm of slow, sustainable living just like old times, but with the comfort of today. Below are the few sustainable efforts we’ve made in Orchid Homestay to reduce our carbon footprint.
Kanyakumari receives around 1456.8 mm of rainfall per annum. And, our rainwater harvesting system collects and stores every drop that falls in our land to recharge the groundwater levels. This helps us reduce dependence on external water sources and live more in tune with the rhythms of nature.
You can’t miss our garden— it practically greets you the moment you arrive. You’ll see fruit trees, blossoming flowers, and a few homegrown veggies like chilli, tomato, brinjal, and plantain. Guests are welcome to water the garden, pluck fresh produce, or simply enjoy its serenity with a cup of tea in hand.
To minimize waste, we’ve set up a bio-composting pit for all fruit and vegetable peels. Guests are encouraged to join in and experience how small habits can make a big difference.
We believe a home should tell the story of the land it belongs to. That’s why we’ve worked with local artisans to fill our space with materials and crafts that are both beautiful and eco-friendly.
Handwoven from water grass by artisans in the region. Take one to the terrace or under a tree in the garden for an evening of quiet reflection.
Our pillows and mattresses are filled with cotton from the Elavam tree — a natural, breathable cotton that gives you a guilt-free good night’s sleep.
The wooden furniture you find in Orchid Homestay is locally made by the artisans in the neighbourhood. Interested in something? Let us connect you with them.
We don’t just want you to enjoy a relaxing stay — we invite you to be a part of this thoughtful rhythm of life. Slow down, tend to a plant, compost your leftovers, and sleep peacefully knowing your stay is making a lighter footprint on the planet.
Just like our ancestors did — with care, respect, and love for the earth.
